Complaining

Thanks to Lemuel Craft

A lot of people complain about the weather. Right now, after the dreary days of winter, people rejoice at eighty degrees, but after a few days, they complain about it being unseasonably hot. The same thing holds true for electronics too. If there’s a storm, people start griping about their Satellite DIRECT TV going out, which in reality never happens. Some people just need to complain about something all the time. Think about your last water cooler conversation at work.

You really don’t know your co-worker well enough to carry on an interesting conversation, so you start with a classic, “How are you?” The reply is usually a “Fine” or “Good,” but nothing more. In order to avoid the awkward silence, you launch into the latest complaint about the weather, your TV, or a little more dangerous but just as common, your job. It’s like complaining is the only common language we share. I think it would do us all good to think of more unique ways to foster small talk.
